The Wood Shop

Our story

About our workshop

Our workshop started with one board for our own kitchen. A few compliments later, the garage filled up with clamps and tools, and making cutting boards became what we do.

Every piece is made by hand, one at a time — no production line and no outsourcing. We pick good hardwood and take the time to get it right.

How a piece gets made

01

Choosing the lumber

Every board starts at the lumber rack. We pick through walnut, maple, and cherry for straight grain and good color.

02

Milling and joinery

The boards are jointed, planed, cut to size, and glued up with food-safe adhesive. End-grain boards are cut and glued a second time to stand the grain on end.

03

Shaping and sanding

Juice grooves are routed, edges are rounded over, and then it's sanding — through five grits until the surface is smooth. This is the slow part.

04

Finishing

Every board gets a few coats of food-safe mineral oil, then a beeswax topcoat buffed to a soft sheen.

Made to be used

These are meant to be used — chop on them, serve on them. Every order comes with simple care instructions, and if a board ever needs attention, just get in touch.
